All foals weaned today-8 Oct 05

All this years foals were weaned today-First, all were put in stalls-Then four mares at a time were led out of the stalls-foals left inside and mares loaded in the big trailer and hauled to the top pasture. It is about half a mile away and the mares can't see over the bluff and the foals are all in stalls. Did this til all seven foals are weaned. The mares were put in with Ziggy ( a pony horse on temporary vacation), five big tough yearlings and a couple mares in foal. Numbers seem to make it easier. Misery loves company. Horses and people need to be treated so that their emotions and mental capacity is not messed up ever. -Life is tough enough with all your faculties on board. Horses are truly herd animals so they need to be in herds much of the year. This is one of the reasons that we castrate most yearlings. They can go in with the herd and when they get vacations from the track-they get to return to the herd. This can't happen to stud colts. Better overall quality of life.
